Shabana Azmi Slams Industry Misconceptions: Acting Over Appearance!

With her diverse appearances in independent, mainstream, and foreign films, actress Shabana Azmi has dazzled audiences for decades. She also addressed the myth that having the "right face" always makes someone a good actress, pointing out that casting decisions made by directors are frequently based only on appearance.

Shabana Azmi stated in a media chat that she thinks undeveloped ability is like an uncut diamond that shines with the right instruction. She fervently defends the value of training, pointing out how it may revolutionize an actor's trade. She did concede, though, that there are certain outliers—those performers who succeed without official training because of their unwavering dedication and practice.

 

However, the actress stressed that a lousy actor cannot make it in the business because training is insufficient to cover the void. Additionally, she clarified a widespread misunderstanding among filmmakers by saying, "I feel that many filmmakers have this misconception that if they hire the right face, they can get work done from them. How can you get the work done? You can if and when you have to use only their faces; but when there are dialogues too, it cannot happen."

 

Speaking about her part in Patang (1993), Shabana reflected on the early stages of filming, when she primarily collaborated with up-and-coming performers. When the seasoned Om Puri joined the cast a week later, she was extremely relieved, thinking to herself, “Oh my god, here is a professional actor.” She described it as a pleasure to work with him. Shabana also mentioned that Naseeruddin Shah remains her all-time favorite co-star.
