Beyond the Screen: Kaitlyn Dever's Heartbreaking Reality During 'The Last of Us' Shoot!

The circumstances surrounding Kaitlyn Dever's debut on The Last of Us were sad. The Emmy nominee disclosed in a recent media discussion that she shot her first significant scene for Season 2, which features Abby's vicious murder of Pedro Pascal's character Joel, just three days after her mother's funeral. She acknowledged that the timing left her emotionally unprepared, but the staff and actors made accommodations to help her get used to it.

Recalling the hectic and demanding nature of the shoot, Dever remarked, "It was just a massive scene emotionally, and with blocking, too." Her mother died in February 2024, a few weeks before production started, after fighting metastatic breast cancer for 14 years.

Dever acknowledged that when the cameras began to roll, she was still in the throes of grief. “I lost my mom two or three weeks before I actually shot this scene… My mom’s funeral was three days before I did my first day. So I was sort of in a fog. I was in a daze,” she revealed.

The creators of The Last of Us promptly adjusted the shot plan to start with coverage that didn't need her presence in order to make room for her. Dever was also free to decide when she was emotionally prepared to assume the position. “Take your time. Take all the time you need,” Craig Mazin, a co-creator of the series, informed her. “While I care extraordinarily about the show, it’s a TV show. I’m not going to disrupt someone’s grieving process.”

This particular scenario, in which Abby tortures Joel before killing him, is reminiscent of the brutal scene in the video game The Last of Us Part II. Because the filming site was secluded, Dever had privacy and there were fewer employees. She relied on instinct since she was unable to follow her typical acting preparation regimen. “I wasn’t actually able to do my normal routine… but I think that really served the character. I just really let it go and didn’t overthink it.”

Dever's performance has already generated buzz despite the emotional weight, appealing to audiences for its unadulterated sincerity. Pedro Pascal pointed out, “It’s ironic that something so violent and tragic between characters can immediately bond you to the actor.” Even though Abby's debut is one of the most dramatic scenes in the series, it also shows how resilient an actress can be while dealing with tragedy in both on- and off-screen roles.
